Self-contained Wireless LAN Positioning Technology for Cities and Buildings

Since a large part of public life takes place in inner cities and enclosed spaces such as shopping malls, office buildings and railroad or subway stations, those are the very places where location-based services are most important. Also for professional applications, for example in warehouses or museums, indoors positioning capability opens up multiple possibilities.

To address this need, Fraunhofer IIS has developed awiloc®, a position determination solution that uses existing wireless networks. The positioning algorithm is not tied to any special transmission technology, it utilizes diverse communication networks, e.g. in the form of wireless LAN, GSM or UMTS base stations. This solution by Fraunhofer IIS makes it possible for mobile devices to independently determine their position in indoor and urban environments based on signal strength measurements.

Networks from the IEEE 802.11 family of wireless LAN standards have emerged as prevalent technology. Hence, they are predominantly used as a basis for positioning. Positions are determined with an accuracy of a few meters. Positioning in communication networks perfectly complements the well-established satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS).

NOUS implements awiloc® technology in it´s project at the Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst München and the NOUSConductor CMS.

By implementing awiloc® to its Multimediaguides, NOUS again sets standards in art education but also in open-air-museums, trade-fairs and urban tourism. By defining the guides position to meter accuracy the user can navigate through in- and outdoor areas. Easy usage, individual consultation and cost-saving integration to existing networks are a matter of course.

NOUS is using this new technology as extension of the already successfully used RFID positioning. As most buildings are already equipped with extended WLAN Technology only minimal expenses must be expected.

About the Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst München project:

Usability and restrained design will be one of the most important points in creating the multimedia exhibition tour for the Staatliche Museum Ägyptischer Kunst in Munich. At the same time it should provide a maximum of interactivity and an easy way of knowledge transfer that should not distract the visitors from viewing the pieces of art.

The visitors may choose between 8 different kinds of tours (kid´s tour, different tours through special exhibitions or numerous theme tours through the permanent collection). The single pieces will be described in Audio- or Video-Files as well as additional graphical material and texts that will be possible to access.

Localized by the awiloc® localization software, the visitors will be shown their position and in front of which artwork they are actually standing.

The multimediaguide won´t just inform in a manifold way about the exhibits, but also navigate through a 3D simulated space and from art piece to art piece in real time. The guide´s content will be easily refilled and updated by the museum´s employees by using the NOUSConductor Content Management System.
