Betania Maciel is a researcher at Federal Rural University of Pernambuco Brazil. She graduated from the same university with a MsC in Rural Communication and Associativism (1994) and earned her PhD in Social Communication from Methodist University of São Paulo (2002), presenting her doctoral dissertation on women's participation in scientific knowledge production. She also is a science communication specialist, graduating from University of Salamanca, Spain. From 2006 to 2011 she presided a research association focusing on “folkcommunication”, i.e. the communication flows of socially vulnerable communities. In 2012 she was awarded an academic leadership laurel by the Brazilian Association of Interdisciplinary Studies in Communication – INTERCOM. Her main research topics are popular culture, social inclusion, media activism and science communication.
