Jeff Hardwick has been working in the Division of Public Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities for the last four years. The Division provides a variety of grants to cultural institutions working to bring humanities to the American public through museum exhibitions, documentary films, radio programs, or digital platforms. His academic background is in American Studies with a doctorate from Yale University and an MA from the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture. His undergraduate degree was in Anthropology from University of California, Berkeley. In 2003 he published a widely-reviewed biography of the émigré architect and “father of the shopping mall” Victor Gruen, Mall Maker, with the University of Pennsylvania Press. He has taught 20th-century American history, architectural history, and public history at Yale University, Corcoran College, George Mason University, and Temple University. Before NEH, Jeff worked as a non-fiction book editor for Smithsonian Books and then Island Press.
