There was a time when the virtual museum concept was interesting gadgetry to “Wow” your visitors. Today, the reality of virtual museums is a solution for museums of all sizes in the areas of: creating exhibits from multiple collection sources; providing archival exhibitions; conservation of collections from visitor traffic and exposure; preserving museums/collections that are no longer in financially viable locations; and, exhibiting warehoused items. Further, today’s virtual museums can integrate existing industry database collection files and applications, create modules that drop seamlessly into existing web sites, and produce tours and other activities using the web base for the PC and MAC. Thus, giving institutions a “create once” but use with many uses/platforms solution.
